Cat. #00050111: BERTHA BELMORE

Sorry, this item has already been sold.

Quite uncommon vintage 3.5 x 5.25-inch black and white British postcard portrait, boldly signed in black fountain pen in the 1930s. In fine condition, with light mounting remnants on the verso. Plump Mancunian character actress Bertha Belmore was classically trained, starting her career in Shakespeare on the London stage. In the early talkie film era, she was routinely called upon to play society matrons and other haughty types with charming names like "Mrs. Puddlefoot," "Madame Moppert" and "Mrs. Bloodgood," whose high dignity was always somehow lost-- to either comic or heartbreaking effect.
