Cat. #001164621: KARL DANE

Sorry, this item has already been sold.

Extremely rare vintage inscribed black fountain pen signature on a 4x6-inch light yellow autograph album page, acquired in-person by inveterate collector Saul Goodman in the 1920s. In good condition and paired with a small book image. Danish silent comic actor Karl Dane, who gained fame in King Vidor's The Big Parade (1925) and went on to a memorable pairing in films and on the vaudeville circuit with George K. Arthur, struggled to find work after Hollywood's transition to talking pictures, owing to his dense and incomprehensible accent. By 1930, he was relegated to less prominent roles, often with little to no dialogue, and the following year, his contract with M.G.M., his home studio, was terminated. Flat broke and despondent, he committed suicide by gunshot in 1934, aged only 47 years.
