Exceptionally rare and quite choice vintage double-weight 11x14-inch sepia-tone glossy portrait by Vandamm Studio from the stage production of "Berkeley Square," boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen, dated to 1930 in another hand along the bottom right. In good condition, with gentle emulsification to the background at the bottom left-hand corner. English-born Leslie Howard played slim, tall, dreamy-eyed types in films like Of Human Bondage (1934), The Petrified Forest (1936) and Pygmalion (1938), earning two Oscar nominations. In 1939, he landed the role for which he will forever be remembered; that of disillusioned Southern gentleman Ashley Wilkes, the object of Vivien Leigh's unrelenting devotion, in Gone with the Wind (1939). He died serving his country in World War II, shot down in a KLM plane over the Bay of Biscay. He was only 50 years old.
