The versatility of character actor Jack Kruschen was such that one could sometimes fail to recognize him as the same person from picture to picture. He played an assortment of volatile, emotional cops, tradesmen, physicians, bartenders, and relatives of numerous ethnicities in films like The Lemon Drop Kid (1951); The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima (1952); sci-fi's The War of the Worlds (1953) and The Angry Red Planet (1959); The Long, Long Trailer (1953); It Should Happen to You (1954); The Night Holds Terror (1955); The Steel Jungle (1956); Cry Terror! (1958); The Apartment (1960), for which he was Oscar-nominated; Cape Fear (1962); McLintock!  (1963); The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964); Harlow (1965); and The Happening (1967); and on countless T.V. programs, including "The Rifleman" (1959-1960), "Batman" (1966) and "Bonanza" (1966-1968).
