Highly controversial Austrian novelist and playwright Arthur Schnitzler explored themes of sexuality, and lambasted the dubious moral sensibilities of upper- and middle-class Hapsburg society. His most famous play "Regen" was famously filmed by Max Ophuls as La Ronde in 1950, and has inspired a number of other screen and stage derivations. His 1926 novella Traumnovelle was the basis for Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut (1999). About a decade after his death, his entire ouvre was denounced as "Jewish filth", and banned and burned by the Nazis.
