Cat. #0041111111: DICK SUTHERLAND

Sorry, this item has already been sold.

Irreplaceable vintage 8x10-inch black and white portrait as Sambo in Uncle Tom's Cabin (1927), boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen in the 1920s. In good condition, with some light edge wear. Craggy-looking character actor Dick Sutherlan was stricken by acromegaly-- the same disfiguring condition which affected Rondo Hatton, Harry Wilson and Andre the Giant. His large facial features and hulking build made him the perfect heavy in silent and early talkie films, such as West of Zanzibar (1927) with Lon Chaney, Seven Footprints to Satan (1929) andĀ Chandu the MagicianĀ (1932) with Bela Lugosi, but he is best remembered for his work in early comedies, opposite Harold Lloyd, Laurel and Hardy, Ben Turpin, and Lloyd Hamilton.
