Scarce vintage inscribed black fountain pen signature on a 3x5-inch tan card, acquired in-person by indefatigable autograph hounds Rose and Irene Gellar in the 1950s, and decorated with a small Players Directory image. In good condition, with a hint of brushing to the paraph he added beneath his name. Les Tremayne spent two decades on the radio, gracing thousands of Golden Age broadcasts with his distinguished, mellifluous voice. In the 1950s, he found new work as a character actor in films, generally cast as authority figures who lent a considerable dose of sober credibility to many an otherwise hard-to-swallow horror and science fiction opus. At his best as General Mann in War of the Worlds (1953) and as the narrator of Forbidden Planet (1956), he also managed to maintain his dignity in cheapies like The Monolith Monsters (1957), From the Earth to the Moon (1958), The Monster of Piedras Blancas (1959), Angry Red Planet (1959), King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), Slime People (1965), The War Between the Planets (1966), Creature of Destruction (1967), and Snakes (1974). In addition, Tremayne showed up in several non-genre efforts, usually in small, but substantial roles, like the auctioneer in North by Northwest (1959) and a newsman in the Bond flick Goldfinger (1964).
