Cat. #00567132: CLIFTON WEBB

Sorry, this item has already been sold.

Scarce vintage 8x10-inch sepia-tone portrait, in costume as the valet in Cole Porter's stage musical "You'll Never Know" (1938), boldly signed in green fountain pen in-person following a performance at New York City's Winter Garden Theater. In good condition, with gentle edgewear. Unforgettable stage and screen star Clifton Webb played fussy, venom-spewing intellectuals who made an art form out of making everyone else look rather stupid. He was nominated for three Academy Awards, for his portrayals of obsessed murderer Waldo Lydecker in Laura (1944), Elliott Templeton in The Razor's Edge (1946) and fastidious Lynn Belvedere in Sitting Pretty (1948). He would would reprise the latter role in several more Mr. Belvedere comedies, before returning to dramas with Stars and Stripes Forever (1952), Titanic (1953), Three Coins in the Fountain (1954), The Man Who Never Was (1956), and Satan Never Sleeps (1962).
