Extremely rare 4.5 x 2.5-inch cut signature of the great American naturalist and ornithological illustrator from the close of a letter on pale grey, textured paper, probably dating to the early to mid-19th century.  In fine condition, with slight age-related toning to the edges; the paper cut quite close to the signature on the right side; and very faint remnants of an erased pencil signature in the lower left corner.  Accompanied by an engraving, with which the autograph could be handsomely matted and framed for display.
