Cat. #000981: RUTH CHATTERTON

Scarce and charming vintage borderless 4x6-inch semi-glossy portrait, boldly signed in black fountain pen in the 1930s. In fine condition for its age, with a mild diagonal crease to the bottom right-hand corner. Renowned stage star Ruth Chatterton was lured to Hollywood by Emil Jannings, to appear in Sins of the Fathers (1928), her only silent picture.  She went on to shine in melodramas and weepies of the late 1920s and 1930s, including Madame X (1929) and Sarah and Son (1930), both of which earned her Academy Award nominations; Lilly Turner (1933) with George Brent; and the star-studded Dodsworth (1936). In 1938, she returned to her roots in the theater, never to appear onscreen again, save for a few televised stage productions in the 1950s. She died somewhat young of a brain hemorrhage, aged only 61.
