Nifty vintage 7.5 x 9.5-inch matte-finish sepia-tone portrait, boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen for inveterate English collector Eric Morehouse in 1936. in fine condition, with slightly trimmed borders; lightly clipped corner tips, not affecting the image itself; and some mounting remnants on verso. Maltese-born character actor Joseph Calleia first came to prominence as a concert singer in England and Europe. In 1931, he entered films playing nasty, weasel-faced gangsters, noteworthy in classic films like After the Thin Man (1936), The Gorilla (1939), Juarez (1939), W.C. Fields' My Little Chickadee (1940), The Monster and the Girl (1941), Jungle Book (1942), The Glass Key (1942), For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), Gilda (1946), and Orson Welles' Touch of Evil (1958).
