Maltese-born character actor Joseph Calleia first came to prominence as a concert singer in England and Europe. In 1931, he entered films playing nasty, weasel-faced gangsters, noteworthy in classic films like After the Thin Man (1936), The Gorilla (1939), Juarez (1939), W.C. Fields' My Little Chickadee (1940), The Monster and the Girl (1941), Jungle Book (1942), The Glass Key (1942), For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943), Gilda (1946), and Orson Welles' Touch of Evil (1958).
