Carroll is best remembered for his multiple collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock, including Rebecca (1940), Suspicion (1941), Spellbound (1945), Strangers on a Train (1951), and North by Northwest (1959). He made a number of contributions to the horror, sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, and crime film genres, including London by Night (1937), A Christmas Carol (1938), Tower of London (1939), Charlie Chan in City in Darkness (1939), Charlie Chan's Murder Cruise (1940), T.V.'s "Topper" (1953-1955), and Tarantula (1955).
