Scarce vintage 4.3 x 6.2-inch matte-finish sepia-tone portrait, boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen in the 1930s. In fine condition, with trimmed borders; mounting remnants on the reverse side; and faint silvering to the darker areas of the image, completely invisible when the piece is viewed head-on. Prolific character actor Hobart Cavanaugh played downtrodden, henpecked nobodies in scores of classic films of the 1930s and 1940s, with two memorable horror roles:  Professor Jasper Quigley in Horror Island (1941) and Bill Stapleton in The Spider Woman Strikes Back (1946).  He was also memorable as Dearing in the Sherlock Holmes film A Study in Scarlet (1933), opposite Reginald Owen.
