The longtime husband of fellow actor Jessica Tandy, character actor Hume Cronyn's six-decade career included memorable work in Alfred Hitchcock's thrilling Shadow of a Doubt (1943) and Lifeboat (1944); the horror favorite Phantom of the Opera (1943); The Seventh Cross (1944), for which he earned an Oscar nomination; Ziegfeld Follies (1945); The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946); Sunrise at Campobello (1960); Cleopatra (1963); The World According to Garp (1982); Brewster's Millions (1985); and the sci-fi gems Cocoon (1985), Batteries Not Included (1987) and Cocoon: The Return (1988).
