Vintage 1920s 3.5 x 5.5-inch matte-finish sepia-tone half-length costume portrait, boldly signed in black fountain pen.  In very good condition for its age.  The German silent film actor went on to direct a series of memorable biopics for Warner Brothers, including The Story of Louis Pasteur (1935), The Life of Emile Zola (1937), Juarez (1939), and Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet (1940).  Among horror and sci-fi buffs, he is remembered as the director of Waxworks (1924) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), and for his portrayal of Valentin, Gretchen's brother, in Faust (1926).
