Great character actor Melvyn Douglas won two Academy Awards, for Hud (1963) and Being There (1979), and was nominated for a third, for I Never Sang for My Father (1970). His over 100 other classic film credits include two early horror classics, James Whale's The Old Dark House (1932) and The Vampire Bat (1933); Annie Oakley (1935); The Lone Wolf Returns (1935); Captains Courageous (1937); The Shining Hour (1938); Ninotchka (1939); The Amazing Mr. Williams (1939); The Sea of Grass (1947); Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948); and, later in life, the superb ghost story The Changeling (1980).
