Originally known as Rita Rio, she began her career as the leader of an all-female singing group, The Girl Friends. After 1941, she switched her name and concentrated on acting, proving a vivacious, decidedly beautiful leading lady in films like Road to Morocco (1941), Louisiana Purchase (1941), Star Spangled Rhythm (1942) and Let's Face It (1943), all with Bob Hope; Hot Rhythm (1944); Another Part of the Forest (1948); Beyond the Forest (1949); Valentino (1951); Kansas City Confidential (1952); and Princess of the Nile (1954).
