Sorry, this item has already been sold.

Beautiful 7x9-inch black and white portrait, looking lovely in the light of a doorway, signed and inscribed in purple fountain pen, circa 1919. In good condition for its age, with a negligible chip to the upper right-hand edge and the writing just a shade light.  As her age advanced and movies transitioned to sound, the leading lady of the silent era found new work as a character actress, memorable in films like Ramona (1936), The Affairs of Annabel (1938), Jesse James (1939), The Story of Alexander Graham Bell (1939), Oh, What a Night (1944), Dakota (1945), and The Best Years of Our Lives (1946).  She made a number of contributions to the horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery film genres, playing Nettie Kelly in The House of Whispers (1920), Madame Coulvet in Tod Browning's The Devil-Doll (1936), Mr. Walters in Charlie Chan's Murder Cruise (1940), a servant in The Catman of Paris (1946), Martha Baylor in The Invisible Informer (1946), Mrs. Grimsby in Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer, Boris Karloff (1949), and a spectator in Phantom of the Rue Morgue (1954).
