Ultra-, ultra-rare vintage 7x11-inch sepia-tone 1918 portrait by Strauss Peyton, bolldy signed and inscribed in black fountain pen in 1921. Sold by RR Auction in 2008, this is one of only four authentically autographed portraits known to exist, as the vast majority were secretarially signed. In good condition for its age, probably trimmed down from a larger photo for framing purposes, with a few flecks of sivering in the upper right-hand area. Volatile, unpredictable Jeanne Eagels entered the annals of theatrical legend for her performance as Somerset Maugham's prostitute, Sadie Thompson, in "Rain". Following her tragic drug overdose at the age of 39, she earned a posthumous Oscar nomination for her portrayal of another Maugham heroine, Leslie Crosbie, in The Letter (1929).
