Former detective William Gargan was a staple character actor of the late 1920s through 1950s, playing policemen, gumshoes, priests, reporters, adventurers, and gangsters in films like Rain (1932), A Night at the Ritz (1935), Black Fury (1935), You Only Live Once (1937), I Wake Up Screaming (1941), Cheers for Miss Bishop (1941), and The Bells of St. Mary's (1945). He was also memorable in the title role of the Ellery Queen mystery series of the 1940s.
