Cat. #0014231141: ETIENNE GIRARDOT

Sorry, this item has already been sold.

Scarce vintage black fountain pen signature on a 4x6-inch light blue album page, acquired in-person in 1939. In good condition, with mild toning in the bottom right-hand area, away from the writing, and suitable for matting with a favorite photograph. Note that the image of the star shown here alongside the scan of the autograph is not included. Birdlike comic character actor Etienne Girardot was an established theatrical favorite long before the turn of the century, particularly renowned for his drag portrayal of Lord Fancourt Babberly in "Charley's Aunt." He entered films in 1912, as the star of Vitagraph's The Violin of Monsieur, and went on to a long string of unforgettable supporting roles, including the crabby coroner Dr. Doremus in the Philo Vance mysteries The Kennel Murder Case (1933), The Dragon Murder Case (1934) and The Garden Murder Case (1936); orphanage official Wyckoff in Curly Top (1935), who endures the indignity of being impeccably impersonated by star Shirley Temple; and King Louis' senile physician in the horror favorite The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939).
