Cat. #0014461: CHARLEY GRAPEWIN

Ultra-rare vintage 11x14-inch sepia-tone portrait, shown out and in costume for 1937's The Good Earth, boldly signed and inscribed in beautiful white fountain pen in 1940, just after his appearance in The Wizard of Oz (1939). In good condition, with minor edgewear. While best remembered for his portrayal of Uncle Henry in the fantasy classic The Wizard of Oz (1939), veteran character actor Charley Grapewin appeared in over 100 other classic films, almost uniformly cast as lovable old codgers.  His long list of credits includes Anne of Green Gables (1934), The Petrified Forest (1936), Captains Courageous (1937), The Good Earth (1937), The Shopworn Angel (1938), Of Human Hearts (1938), Sabotage (1939), Johnny Apollo (1940), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), and They Died with Their Boots on (1941).  Along with Clara Blandick, his autograph is one of the two rarest Oz stars to locate in authentically autographed material and this is the real McCoy.
