Cat. #0014791: WALTER HAMPDEN

Sorry, this item has already been sold.

Scarce vintage 8x10-inch sepia-tone publicity portrait in the title role of the 1932 Broadway hit Richelieu, boldly signed in fountain pen.  On glossy heavy stock paper and in fine condition for its age, with several dark patches in the background that appear to be part of the image itself.  The esteemed leading man of the stage, remembered for his definitive portrayals of Hamlet and Cyrano de Bergerac, spent his later years in Hollywood, playing distinguished old blowhards in films like All This, and Heaven Too (1940), Reap the Wild Wind (1942), The Adventures of Mark Twain (1944), A Double Life (1947), All About Eve (1950), Five Fingers (1952), and Sabrina (1954).  He is remembered by horror fans for his portrayal of the Archdeacon in William Dieterle's 1939 version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, opposite Charles Laughton.
