His first cinematic bullseye came with the recreation of his Broadway role as malevolent handyman Leroy Jessup in The Bad Seed (1956), and he went on to memorable performances in The Girl Can't Help It (1956), Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (1957), 3:10 to Yuma (1957), Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958), and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). His extensive television work included a classic episode of "The Twilight Zone" entitled "Mr. Bevis" (1960) and a recurring role as Judge Jonathan Dexter on the popular sitcom "Phyllis" (1975-1977).
