Cat. #00166213: NOEL MADISON

Scarce and choice 7.5 x 9.5-inch sepia-tone portrait, boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen for inveterate collector Eric Moorehouse in 1936. In fine condition for its age, with slight trimming to the borders, the corner tips clipped to be diagonal for decorative purposes and a few minor surface creases. In nearly 75 films from 1930 through 1943, character actor Noel Madison played remarkably complex psychopaths in all varieties: Smooth-talking gangsters, low-life henchmen, and merciless madmen of German, Japanese and other ethnicities. He was memorable in crime, mystery and noir flicks like Sinners' Holiday (1930), The Doorway to Hell (1930), Little Caesar (1931), The Finger Points (1931), The Hatchet Man (1932), Laughter in Hell (1933), 'G' Men (1935), The Pace That Kills (1935), Muss 'em Up (1936), Murder at Glen Athol (1936), The House of Secrets (1936), Queen of Crime (1938), The Man with 100 Faces (1938), Charlie Chan in City of Darkness (1939), Know Your Money (1940), Footsteps in the Dark (1941), A Shot in the Dark (1941), Secret Agent of Japan (1942), A Tragedy at Midnight (1942), Bombs Over Burma (1942), and The Black Raven (1943), with George Zucco and Glenn Strange.
