Uncommonly early 8x10-inch black and white 1939 publicity portrait, used to promote his then-forthcoming appearance as the titular U.S. President in Abraham Lincoln in Illinois (1940), boldly signed with his name alone in blue fountain pen, probably in 1939. In good condition, with minor edgewear. One-of-a-kind, Oscar-nominated actor Raymond Massey is remembered by horror and science-fiction fans for his portrayals of Philip Waverton in James Whale's The Old Dark House (1932), John and Oswald Cabal in Things to Come (1936) and the murderous Jonathan Brewster— who uncannily resembled Boris Karloff!— in Arsenic and Old Lace (1944). He also had a small part, as a cabinet member, in Maurice Elvey's High Treason in 1929.
