Cat. #001673171211122: WINSOR MCKAY

Ultra-, ultra-rare, one-of-a-kind autographed heavy pencil drawing by the beyond brilliant cartoonist and pioneering animator of "Gertie the Dinosaur" on a roughly 8 x 11.5-inch sheet of folded tan paper, depicting a young girl and her friend at a birthday party he attended in 1928; Little Nemo; Dr. Pill; and the Princess of Slumberland.  The autograph reads: "We hope you will be invited to your 36th birthday party and have as nice a time as we've had tonight at your mamma's-- Winsor McKay and Gang August 26th - 1928."  Across 30 years, we have seen 6 examples of McKay's autograph on the market, two of them sketches-- but never of his three beloved characters from the comic strip "Little Nemo in Slumberland".  This one is absolutely magnificent for display. In good condition for its age, overall, with a tape repair on the verso to the fold down the center; toning throughout; and three minor stains to the bottom right-hand corner, not actually touching the artwork or signature.  Worthy of professional matting and framing for display. We include here some samples of McKay's wonderful artwork, which are not included with the original artwork.
