Highly rare vintage 5.5 x 6-inch sepia-tone portrait by Hall of Los Angeles, boldly signed in black fountain pen, circa 1916. From the collection of fellow film actor Peter Hansen. In good condition, with the remnants of black photo mounts to the bottom corners. Rough- and-tough, good-looking silent actor and director Earl Metcalfe is remembered for an assortment of silent comedies, dramas and action flicks, including Juan And Juanita (1912), Private Smith (1913), The Gamblers (1914), And the Parrot, Said (1915), The Hermit of Bird Island (1915), The Jade Necklace (1916), The Black Door (1917), While New York Sleeps (1920), The Lone Wagon (1923), Sin Cargo (1926), The King of Kings (1927),and Eagle of The Night (1928). He died in an airplane accident during the filming of a aviation melodrama in California, aged only 38 years. This is the only signed portrait of the star we have ever encountered.
