After decades in the classical theater and supporting roles in British films like Nineteen Eighty-Four(1954), Three Cases of Murder (1955), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), and Ben-Hur (1959),versatile, cerebral character actor Andre Morell found new fame in horror, sci-fi and mystery flicks of the 1950s and 1960s, especially at Hammer Studios. He was unforgettable as Professor Bernard Quartermass on T.V.'s "Quartermass and the Pit" (1955-1959) and Dr. Watson to Peter Cushing's Sherlock Holmes in The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959). He was also noteworthy in The Giant Behemoth (1959), The Shadow of the Cat (1961), She (1965), The Plague of Zombies (1966), The Mummy's Shroud (1967), "Dr. Who" (1966), and The Vengeance of She (1968). Not long before his death in 1978, he had a small role as Lord Gustavus Adolphus Wendover in Stanley Kubrick's historical epic Barry Lyndon (1978).
