The first of the "angry young men," playwright John Osborne electrified and transformed British theater with his 1956 bombshell "Look Back in Anger He subsequently scored major successes with "The Entertainer" (1957) and "Luther" (1961), and won an Oscar for his screenplay for Tom Jones (1963) in 1964.
