Cat. #001975113: EUGENE O'NEILL

Sorry, this item has already been sold.

Ultra-, ultra-rare vintage 8x10-inch double-weight glossy black and white portrait, boldly signed and inscribed in black fountain pen in 1946.  It is very probable that the Sara to whom he dedicates was Sara Greenspan, the business manager at the Theatre Guild, which premiered many of his plays.  In fine condition, with the top left corner tip missing and a jagged tear in the background of the image, just above his head at the right. The tear has been rather ineffectively repaired on the back with scotch tape, but matting and/or framing would likely render it barely detectable.  This is the first 8x10 signed portrait we have ever encountered of the Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, whose works include "Beyond the Horizon" (1918), "The Emperor Jones" (1920), "Anna Christie" (1920), "Desire Under the Elms" (1922), "All God's Chillun Got WIngs" (1924), "Mourning Becomes Electra" (1931), "Ah, Wilderness!' (1934), "The Iceman Cometh" (1939), "Long Day's Journey Into Night" (1941), and "A Moon for the Misbegotten" (1941).
