Classic Entertainment Autographs

Cat. #001983121: REGINALD OWEN

Scarce vintage blue ballpoint pen signature on a 3 x 4.75-inch tan card, acquired in-person by a busy New York City-based autograph hound in the early 1950s. In good condition and excellent for matting with a favorite photograph. Eminent English character actor Reginald Owen entered films during the silent era, playing cranky, no-nonsense men of authority in classic films like Henry VIII (1911), Possession (1922), The Letter (1929) with Jeanne Eagels, Voltaire (1933), Madame Du Barry (1934), The Call of the Wild (1935), A Tale of Two Cities (1935), The Great Ziegfeld (1936), Random Harvest (1942), Mrs. Miniver (1942), Madame Curie (1942), Woman of the Year (1944), National Velvet (1944), and The Valley of Decision (1945).  He is something of a regular in horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery films:  He played Arthur Conan Doyle's Dr. Watson, opposite Clive Brook, in Sherlock Holmes (1932), then landed the role of the gumshoe himself in A Study in Scarlet (1933); he was Ebeneezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol (1938); he starred as Professor Elliott in Tarzan's Secret Treasure (1941) and Lord Farmour in The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945); and he popped up in two Disney classics, as Captain Boom in Mary Poppins (1964) and General Teagler in Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971).  On television, he was memorable as the recurring character of Ockie on "Bewitched" (1966-1968).
