Scarce and quite desirable 8x10-inch sepia-tone portrait, boldly signed and inscribed in back fountain pen around 1933. In good condition, with one whitish fleck embedded in the image itself on the left side. Dashing South African leading man Basil Rathbone, best known for his longtime portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, made several noteworthy contributions to the horror genre. He was unforgettable as Baron Wolf de Frankenstein in Son of Frankenstein (1939), the Duke of Gloucester in Tower of London (1939), Montague Hartely in The Black Cat (1941), Sir Joel Cadman in The Black Sleep (1956), Carmichael in Tales of Terror (1962), John F. Black in The Comedy of Terrors (1963), Dr. Farraday in Queen of Blood (1966), Reginald Ripper in The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (1966), Gregor in Hillbillys in a Haunted House (1967), and Perez in Autopsia de una Fantasma (1968).
