Cat. #0031162: MAY ROBSON

Sorry, this item has already been sold.

Scarce and extremely early vintage 8x10-inch matte-finish black and white portrait, boldly signed and inscribed in fountain pen in 1917.  In good condition for its age, with mild creasing to the right corner tips; the number 19 written in another hand near the top of the left border; and a gentle vertical bend along a small area of the right edge.  Few rivaled May Robson at playing crusty, gruff, domineering society matrons and elder relatives.  Oscar-nominated for her portrayal of Damon Runyon's Apple Annie in Frank Capra's Lady for a Day (1933), she was also memorable in The King of Kings (1927), The Angel of Broadway (1927), Little Orphan Annie (1932), Alice in Wonderland (1933), Mills of the Gods (1934), Anna Karenina (1935), A Star Is Born (1937), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938), Bringing Up Baby (1938), Nurse Edith Cavell (1939), Four Wives (1939), and Four Mothers (1941).
