Cat. #004031822: GEORGE E. STONE

Sorry, this item has already been sold.

Scarce and nifty 8x10-inch deckle-edged black and white portrait, warmly and effusively inscribed and boldly signed in black fountain pen in the 1930s. In good condition, with a mild crease to the upper area, invisible when the photo is viewed head-on. Diminutive, weasel-faced character actor George E. Stone seemed born to play gangsters and unsavory urban types with names like Toothpick Charlie and Society Max in films like The Front Page (1931), Anthony Adverse (1936), Guys and Dolls (1955), The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), and Some Like It Hot (1959). Perhaps his most popular role of the 1940s was as The Runt in Columbia's Boston Blackie series. In the late 1940s, Stone's failing eyesight nearly forced him into retirement, but friends in the business found undemanding work for him on various television programs, most notably as the Court Clerk on "Perry Mason" (1958-1962).
