Cat. #00566322: JOHN WAYNE

Terrific, if flawed, vintage 8x10-inch black and white still portrait as small-town sheriff John T. Chance in Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo (1959), boldly signed and inscribed in blue fountain pen in 1961. While in generally fine condition for its age, priced to reflect patches of brownish residue to all four corners and along the upper edge, which could be hidden with proper matting, and some creasing and chipping throughout. If in better condition, this iconic piece would easily fetch $2000.00 or more at auction. Western and war film icon John Wayne was nominated for Academy Awards for Sands of Iwo Jima (1949) and The Alamo (1960) before winning for 1969’s True Grit in 1970. His was elsewhere unforgettable— always playing some slight variation on the same character, who was, arguably, himself— in Stagecoach (1939), Reap the Wild Wind (1942), Angel and the Badman (1947), Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), Rio Grande (1950), The Quiet Man (1952), Hondo (1953), The Searchers (1956), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), The Longest Day (1962), How the West Was Won (1962), The Green Berets (1968), and The Cowboys (1972).
