TOUGH to acquire vintage inscribed late 1960s signature in black fountain pen signature on the inside cover of a paperback copy of Jim Thomson's novel, The Undefeated, adapted from the 1969 big screen classic, starring The Duke. He is shown on the cover of the book. Some gentle toning and surface creasing, with the flyleaf possibly removed; otherwise, in good condition for its age. Western and war film icon John Wayne was nominated for Academy Awards for Sands of Iwo Jima (1949) and The Alamo (1960) before winning for 1969’s True Grit in 1970. His was elsewhere unforgettable— always playing some slight variation on the same character, who was, arguably, himself— in Stagecoach (1939), Reap the Wild Wind (1942), Angel and the Badman (1947), Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), Rio Grande (1950), The Quiet Man (1952), Hondo (1953), The Searchers (1956), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), The Longest Day (1962), How the West Was Won (1962), The Green Berets (1968), and The Cowboys (1972).
