Cat. #005663221: JOHN WAYNE

Fun vintage color candid portrait, measuring about 6.5 x 7 inches in a blue matte in a brown frame-- possibly 8x10 inches inside the frame, as we believe this is a cover from a copy of American Yachtman, but not examined outside of the framing-- shown aboard his or a friend's yacht in the 1970s, warmly, if cryptically signed and inscribed for a buddy in that period: "To Hal - I starring in 'A Comfort Zone'-- Not Station. John Wayne." We have absolutely no idea what that means! The original recipient clearly drilled the piece to the wall of his boat or home, as there are four holes in the center of each quarter of the frame; otherwise, in good condition.  Western and war film icon John Wayne was nominated for Academy Awards for Sands of Iwo Jima (1949) and The Alamo (1960) before winning for 1969’s True Grit in 1970. His was elsewhere unforgettable— always playing some slight variation on the same character, who was, arguably, himself— in Stagecoach (1939), Reap the Wild Wind (1942), Angel and the Badman (1947), Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), Rio Grande (1950), The Quiet Man (1952), Hondo (1953), The Searchers (1956), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), The Longest Day (1962), How the West Was Won (1962), The Green Berets (1968), and The Cowboys (1972).
