Cat. #0058521: BREMBER WILLS

Sorry, this item has already been sold.

Absolutely impossible to find black fountain pen signature on a 5.75 x 8.75-inch 1929-1930 season playbill for a stage production of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at London's storied Old Vic, acquired in-person following a performance alongside autographs of Martita Hunt (itself extremely uncommon), John Gielgud, Eric Adeney, Francis James, Adele Dixon, and Donald Wolfit. In fine condition, with gentle age-related toning and crinkling. Note that the image of the star shown here alongside the scan of the signed piece is not included. Madcap character actor Brember Wills, who was really a stage performer, made only a small number of forays into film, one of them beloved by horror, sci-fi and fantasy fans: In 1932, he was invited to Hollywood by James Whale-- who knew a thing or two about the London stage-- to perform alongside Charles Laughton, Gloria Stuart and Boris Karloff, as the deranged pyromaniac Saul Femm, in The Old Dark House, the film adaptation of J.B. Priestley's novel, Benighted. This is the third example we have encountered in over 35 years.
